Feb 2011 California State Museum

Feb 2011 the Argonaut A's met at Colina de Oro. Tour to be rescheduled modern irons to the
California State Museum. One of the artifacts at the museum... is the "
Auto Kamp Kook Kit"
With the mass produced and affordable Ford Motor Company’s Model T and Model A, Americans experienced a freedom to travel like never before. In the early 1920s, people started getting in their cars and out of the cities.
People wanted to take off to explore the great United States and especially the golden West. This was before the establishment of motels along the roads, so people had to camp when they wanted to stop for the night.
The invention of the Auto Kamp Kook Kit allowed travelers an easy way to cook their
meals at their campsite. The stove started out with a single burner, and was advertised
as allowing you to “cook anything you wanted!”
The stove ran on the same type of gas that cars used, making it very convenient for car
travelers. The stove has a gas canister that can be filled by siphoning and transferring
gas from a car’s gas tank.
Later models had two burners, legs that increased the height to make cooking easier,
and windshields to protect the fl ame from burning out while cooking. Many travelers coming to California used these stoves – whether visiting for vacation and sunshine or moving to California for more opportunities.
